I’ve been a resident of Selsdon for nearly 35 years and have always considered the centre to be an asset to the community, and how lucky we are to have such a central place for people to attend. So just after lockdown and with some spare time on my hands, I responded to an advert asking for volunteers. My role consists of chaperoning (or escorting as we call it at the centre) our clients to and from their homes to the centre via our minibus. Over the years I have become quite fond of our ladies and gents – they are wonderfully funny, interesting, intelligent and charismatic. Certainly, no two journeys are ever the same! I also help in the kitchen as an extra pair of hands when needed, particularly for the busier events when there is external entertainment provided.

The centre can only exist if we have volunteers and attendees, both of which we are short of. I would urge anyone in the area to encourage family, friends, or even neighbours, who may benefit from coming along for company, social stimulation and good, home-cooked food. It would be a travesty if the centre were to close, so do please consider supporting it in any way you can, so that it will thrive for generations to come. Pop in, have a chat, grab a cuppa – we’d love to see you!
