Why volunteer with us?

Are you seeking a fulfilling way to contribute to your community and enhance your mental health? The Selsdon Community Clubhouse invites you to join our dedicated team of volunteers. Just a couple of hours of your time a week, can significantly impact the lives of others – and your own.

According to the NHS, volunteering not only reduces stress and combats depression but also creates a positive cycle of giving and receiving, benefiting both mental and emotional health. At the Clubhouse, you’ll become part of a vibrant community team, offering activities such as our lunch club, social events, bingo and our carers’ café etc. Volunteers are at the heart of these efforts, ensuring that each service is delivered with warmth and enthusiasm.

Whether you’re working or retired, we offer flexible volunteering options to fit your schedule and skills, by joining our team you will also learn new skills and receive ongoing training.

If you’re ready to make a difference and be part of a friendly, dedicated team, please reach out to us via the form below.

Your time and talents can change lives – starting with your own.

Opportunities include

All our volunteers work on 2 hour shifts and choose which days/times they are available.

Cook/Chef

We’re always in need of a cook or chef who is able to take the lead in our kitchen, particularly when we host our special events or themed lunches.

Kitchen team

Our much valued kitchen volunteers assist with food preparation, laying and clearing tables, serving the lunches and tea and coffee.

Drivers and Passenger Assistants

Our capable and vetted volunteers drive our minibus within the local area, enabling those with mobility issues to attend the Clubhouse. They are always accompanied by passenger assistant, who will collect the client from their front door, help them onto the minibus, into the Clubhouse and the same after the lunch club ends.

Hear from our volunteers

Not sure or would like to know more about volunteering with us? Why not hear what our past and present volunteers have to say.

After retiring I found that I had a lot of spare time on my hands. Hearing that the Selsdon Centre was looking for volunteers was literally a Godsend. I have found it to be so rewarding. I  have made new friends and it’s just so lovely the appreciation I feel from the clients. They’re such a lovable bunch and I thoroughly look forward to seeing them every week.

Janet

I have volunteered at Selsdon Community Clubhouse
(formally Selsdon Centre for the Retired) for a few years now and thoroughly look forward to my weekly visits.
From the moment I started, I felt at home with both clients, staff and other volunteers. It’s great to be able to give back to the local community but I can honestly say it gives me a huge amount of pleasure too. My job satisfaction is sky high!

My 1 x 2 hour weekly session fits in well with my other commitments, although it is always great to do extra shifts preparing and serving food for special occasions eg bingo or afternoon tea if needed and you have the time.
So, if you have some spare time and enjoy the company of/ working with others, I’d certainly recommend that you pop in and see what a lovely place SSC is.

Tracy

I’ve been a resident of Selsdon for nearly 35 years and have always considered the centre to be an asset to the community, and how lucky we are to have such a central place for people to attend. So just after lockdown and with some spare time on my hands, I responded to an advert asking for volunteers. My role consists of chaperoning (or escorting as we call it at the centre) our clients to and from their homes to the centre via our minibus. Over the years I have become quite fond of our ladies and gents – they are wonderfully funny, interesting, intelligent and charismatic. Certainly, no two journeys are ever the same! I also help in the kitchen as an extra pair of hands when needed, particularly for the busier events when there is external entertainment provided.

The centre can only exist if we have volunteers and attendees, both of which we are short of. I would urge anyone in the area to encourage family, friends, or even neighbours, who may benefit from coming along for company, social stimulation and good, home-cooked food. It would be a travesty if the centre were to close, so do please consider supporting it in any way you can, so that it will thrive for generations to come. Pop in, have a chat, grab a cuppa – we’d love to see you!
